One Week Until World MS Day 2010!

We are only seven days away from the annual World MS Day! This year’s global event will take place on May 26, when people from around the world will unite in our common goal of raising awareness, donations and advocacy for this disease.

Over 2,000,000 people worldwide have MS, including 4,800 right here in the Kentucky Southeast Indiana area. Every day more and more people are diagnosed, and they need our help in continuing the fight to rid the world of MS.

The focus for World MS Day this year is employment. You can take the employment and MS survey here (results will be posted on May 26), take part in an MS society activity, organize an activity, or donate. If you’d like to help out locally, we will have a number of volunteer and advocacy opportunities thoughout the week and all year long. Log on to our website to view upcoming volunteer events, as well as information about how you can help!

For all the information about World MS Day and how you can get involved in helping create an entire world free of MS, go to their website, or you can follow them through social media via their Twitter feed at @WorldMSDay, or become a Fan on their Facebook page here.

29 Gifts – One Week In

It has been just over a week since we officially embarked upon our 29 Days of Giving Challenge, which began last Thursday with an amazing kick-off reception, headlined by an appearance from Cami Walker, author of the bestseller “29 Gifts – How a Month of Giving can Change your Life” and the founder of the 29 Gifts concept.

In the days following the kick-off, I have been absolutely floored by the response we have received. In one week, we have had 24 different posts to the blog site (www.29giftskentucky.blogspot.com), coming from many of our 29 Gifts Ambassadors. They are sharing their stories and experiences during this time, and giving the readers an inside look at the differences, both big and small, that they are making through their generosity.

So many times we can become jaded about the world around us, and fall into thinking that everyone is out for themselves, and that helping others is a lost aspect of our society, gone the way of black and white TVs and rotary telephones.

What our Ambassadors are doing has the potential not only to effect those they personally help, but a much larger group of people, many of whom they may never meet. They are truly embracing the spirit of giving in Kentucky, and are living up to the simple premise behind it all – It only takes one person to inspire hundreds.

Whether it is a simple hello to someone you pass at the office, or volunteering to help a neighbor with a task they are unable to complete, the spirit of giving is boundless. That is the beauty of this movement – each person has the ability to cater every giving opportunity into exactly what is needed. Some of the most inspiring stories involve the most simple of acts, but the joy they produce is second to none.

I know that I have been inspired by reading their stories and encouraged by the amount of time and energy they have volunteered this past week. They are touching the lives of so many by making an effort to give a little of themselves to those in need, the impact of which can be breathtaking.

One of the most inspiring aspects about this entire experience is not only that the amount of response by those willing to give, but the excitement and joy they derive from it. It is apparent that the title of Cami Walker’s powerful book is true – a month of giving CAN change your life. These amazing Ambassadors enjoy being a part of making a difference in someone’s life and never stop looking for ways to help others.

If you would like to help in the 29 Days of Giving Challenge, please contact Matthew Harris at matthew.harris@kyw.nmss.org, or call the National MS Society office at (502) 451-0014.

At a very early age Jeannie knew she had a heart for service. With the wisdom that there would always be those less fortunate, she set out to make sure she took every measure, made every effort and never backed down to the mission of helping others. In these difficult times Jeannie understood the challenges the Kentucky Southeast Indiana Chapter was facing and took it upon herself to step up and out to create a world free of MS.

She not only serves on our Board of Trustees, she has become the creator of an exciting new Chapter event, Crystal Boots & Silver Spurs! A country chic event she has opened her home for. Jeannie has been honored as a Volunteer, a Board Member, a Corporate Star and a true believer in the mission.
